Five thousand years of history, two nights under the stars.

Gozo is easy to underestimate. It is small — just 67 square kilometres — and it sits in the shadow of its larger Maltese neighbour. You can cross it in twenty minutes. But this island has been drawing people to it for longer than almost any other inhabited place on earth, and once you are here, it is not difficult to understand why.

The temples of Ġgantija were raised around 3600 BC — a full thousand years before the Great Pyramid at Giza, and five centuries before work began at Stonehenge. They stand today not behind glass but in open air, worn and warm in the afternoon light, in a silence that feels entirely appropriate.

Homer, writing in the eighth century BC, placed the nymph Calypso's island somewhere in the central Mediterranean. Scholars and travellers have argued the case for Gozo for centuries — and the cave above Ramla Bay, looking out over a beach of amber sand towards open water, makes a persuasive argument without saying a word.

This astrophotography experience is not built on the promise of a pristine dark sky. Gozo is not the darkest destination in Europe, and it would be misleading to suggest otherwise. What it does have are a number of locations that still benefit from Bortle 4–5 skies — a rural to semi-rural classification, dark enough for the Milky Way to be clearly visible to the naked eye, and dark enough to do real and rewarding astrophotography work. What Gozo offers beyond that is something darker destinations rarely can: a landscape of extraordinary historical depth, a warm and accessible Mediterranean island, all within a few hours of most European airports.

The appeal is the combination. Stone that is older than recorded history. A sky that rewards a camera and a considered eye. And an island compact enough to experience meaningfully in four days.

Bortle 4–5 skies across several locations on the island — dark enough for naked-eye Milky Way visibility and a solid foundation for landscape astrophotography and introductory deep-sky work.

The Astrophotography Experience

Four days shaped by a clear rhythm. Tuesday is for arrival — the ferry crossing, checking in, and allowing the island to make its first impression at its own pace. Wednesday and Thursday are the heart of the experience: mornings given over to Gozo's history and culture, an afternoon preparation session before the first night out, and two full astrophotography field sessions under a dark Mediterranean sky. Friday morning, breakfast and departure.

The daytime visits are not photography courses. They are an opportunity to move through one of the Mediterranean's most historically layered islands with someone who knows it well. You are welcome to bring a camera — most guests do — but the agenda is exploration, not technique. That comes later, in the dedicated pre-session workshop on Wednesday afternoon, and then under the stars.

The Daytime Programme

The programme takes in four of Gozo's most historically significant sites across two days, with time at each to explore properly rather than simply pass through.

Ġgantija Temples

Among the oldest free-standing structures on earth, raised around 3600 BC — predating both the Egyptian pyramids and Stonehenge by centuries. The temples stand in open air on a hillside above Xagħra, largely as they were found. Entry included.

Ta' Kola Windmill

One of the last surviving traditional windmills on Gozo, built in 1725 during the rule of the Knights of St John and in use until the mid-twentieth century. A well-preserved piece of rural Maltese heritage set in open farmland. Entry included.

Ta' Pinu Basilica

A striking neo-Romanesque basilica standing largely alone in open countryside near the village of Għarb. Built on the site of a sixteenth-century chapel following a reported apparition in 1883, it remains an active place of pilgrimage — and one of the most quietly atmospheric buildings on the island.

The Citadel, Victoria

A fortified hilltop city at the geographic heart of Gozo, with origins stretching back to the Bronze Age. Substantially rebuilt by the Knights of St John in the seventeenth century following a catastrophic Ottoman raid that left the island almost entirely depopulated. The views from the bastions take in the whole of Gozo. Entry included.

Itinerary

Tuesday — Arrival
Arrive at Malta International Airport and make your way to Gozo by ferry — a crossing of around twenty-five minutes, with the island rising steadily from the water as you approach. A return airport taxi transfer can be arranged on your behalf if required; you pay the driver directly (see Practical Arrangements below). The rest of the day is entirely your own. Check in, walk, eat well, and let the island settle around you. No sessions, no schedules.

Wednesday — Temples, Windmill & First Night
10:30 — Morning excursion to Ġgantija Temples and Ta' Kola Windmill, with time to explore each site properly. Return by 13:00.
16:00 — Pre-session workshop (1½ hours). Covers night sky planning, composition, camera settings, and preparation for the evening ahead. Held at a suitable location ahead of the session.
Evening — First astrophotography field session, beginning at astronomical darkness. Landscape astrophotography on location, working with the Milky Way and the island's terrain.

Thursday — Ta' Pinu, Citadel & Second Night
10:30 — Morning excursion to Ta' Pinu Basilica and the Citadel in Victoria, with time to explore both sites at a considered pace. Return by 13:00. The afternoon is free.
Evening — Second astrophotography field session, beginning at astronomical darkness. Building on the previous night — deeper into technique, location, and the work itself.

Friday — Departure
Breakfast and morning return transfer to Malta International Airport. Gozo tends to follow people home.

Evening Sessions — Astrophotography

Two field sessions of around three and a half hours each, timed around full astronomical darkness and planned in advance against the lunar calendar. New moon periods are the only time that counts — and all departures are scheduled accordingly.

The sessions focus on landscape astrophotography: working with the Milky Way, the island's terrain, and the relationship between a dark foreground and a genuinely dark sky. Where equipment and conditions allow, we will also explore deep-sky imaging — targeting nebulae, star clusters, and other objects beyond what the naked eye can detect.

All on-location guidance, session planning, and field support is included across both nights.

Available Departures — 2027

All departures run Tuesday to Friday and are timed around the new moon to ensure genuinely dark skies. The season runs from April through October, excluding July and August, with two departures each month — ten in total across the season.

All session times are local Malta time (CEST, UTC+2) and approximate. Moon phases are indicative — verify exact dates at timeanddate.com before booking.

A note on April and October. In April, the Milky Way galactic core is only just beginning to rise and will appear low on the eastern horizon toward the end of sessions — excellent for landscape astrophotography and deep-sky work, but the dramatic summer arch is not yet present. In October, the core is setting earlier each week and deep-sky imaging becomes the natural focus. Both months offer genuinely dark, rewarding skies; the character of the experience simply shifts with the season.

Pricing & Practical Arrangements

I am a local guide and ground operator based on Gozo — not a travel agent or tour operator. The guiding fee covers everything I personally deliver. Airport transfers and accommodation are arranged separately, either by you directly or with my assistance, so that you remain in full control of your own travel arrangements.

Guiding Fee

€875 per person Paid in advance to secure your place. Non-refundable. Fully transferable to another participant or an alternative 2027 departure, subject to availability. Covers: both astrophotography field sessions, Wednesday afternoon pre-session workshop, both daytime excursions, all on-location transport, entry fees to Ġgantija Temples, Ta' Kola Windmill and the Citadel, session planning, lunar calendar scheduling, and all on-location guidance and support. €875 pp

Airport Transfer

A return taxi transfer between Malta International Airport and your accommodation in Gozo costs approximately €150 per booking. This is a per-journey cost, not a per-person cost — so if you are travelling as a couple or with a friend, you share it equally and each pay half. I am happy to arrange this with a trusted local driver on your behalf. You pay the driver directly — there is no markup and no handling fee. Just let me know when you register your interest and I will take care of the booking.

Accommodation

I recommend booking three nights on a bed and breakfast basis at a hotel or guesthouse of your choice in Gozo. The accommodation estimate below is based on an approximate sole occupancy rate of €125 per person per night — around €375 per person for the three nights. If you are travelling as a couple or sharing a room with a friend, the per-person cost will be noticeably lower. Rates also vary by property and season. I am happy to suggest specific options that are well-placed for the experience — please ask when you register your interest. Bookings are made directly by you via Booking.com, the hotel's own website, or your preferred booking channel.

Estimated total cost: approximately €1,325 per person (sole occupancy)
Guiding fee €875 + airport transfer ~€75 (half share) + accommodation ~€375 (3 nights B&B, sole occupancy). Couples or guests sharing a room will pay less — both the taxi and accommodation costs reduce when shared. Accommodation and transfer costs are estimates and paid independently.
