Astrophotographer • Aurora Guide • Night Sky Educator
Andy Keen is a professional astrophotographer, educator, and veteran aurora chaser from the United Kingdom. He has spent more than 16 years under Arctic skies and over 10,000 hours beneath the Northern Lights, helping thousands of guests from around the world to witness and photograph the aurora with a 95% success rate since 2008.
His photography and insights have appeared in The Guardian, Sky & Telescope, Wanderlust, Daily Mail, and American Express Travel.
Andy has also worked on screen and behind the scenes for several television and documentary productions. His most recent involvement was with the documentary The Sun (Die Sonne), directed by Fabian Wolf and produced by Spiegel TV for ARTE France in 2024, with international distribution by Curiosity Stream, ZDF, and other broadcasters.
Earlier in his career he appeared in the BBC production Little Stargazing (2012), which was nominated for a BAFTA.
In 2025 Andy founded Keen Astro, expanding his work beyond aurora expeditions into deep-sky imaging, astro-landscape photography, and advanced image processing. His workshops offer hands-on tuition for photographers of all levels, blending practical technique with science, storytelling, and a genuine connection to the night sky.
Over time his work has evolved from purely Arctic aurora expeditions to a broader exploration of landscape and night-sky environments across different latitudes. In recent years Andy established a Mediterranean base on the island of Gozo, allowing him to expand into seasonal Milky Way research, astro-landscape development, and island-based fieldwork across southern Europe.
From this central Mediterranean location he is developing a series of carefully researched astrophotography projects that explore the relationship between geology, history and the night sky.
Andy also specialises in destination and activity development and has helped establish several Arctic locations as internationally recognised centres for nature and aurora tourism.
Earlier in his career he founded and led The Neuropathy Trust, a UK charity supporting people with chronic nerve pain, raising more than £2 million during his tenure.
Today he brings together astronomy, photography, and environmental awareness to inspire and educate. His goal is to help people connect with the landscapes above and below through memorable experiences beneath the stars.

"Andy Keen is an affable chap who I met whilst directing a film about the Aurora Borealis for BBC's Learning programme 'Little Stargazing'. We chose Andy to be our 'on-screen' guide due to his experience and local knowledge of the Northern Lights. He couldn't have been more helpful to us in our endeavours, setting up authentic indigenous outdoor experiences for the children and their fathers in addition to hunting out the lights. It was a real adventure and one of the best filming experiences I've had - which went on to be nominated for a BAFTA. Andy is a warm, approachable and friendly person who has a genuine enthusiasm for life and the natural world. He loves what he does, and it shows. Get ready for some jaw dropping moments that you won't forget in a hurry."
